Wavelength Learning designed and delivered five blended learning courses for The Department of Education and Training Victoria (DET) as part of the Professional Learning Suite for Learning Specialists.

The role of learning specialists includes leading the development of highly-effective teaching practices and supporting the uplift of teacher capability across their school. This learning suite aims to build the capabilities of these learning specialists (existing and new) over the next three years through a suite of blended professional learning offerings.

The original request for face-to-face delivery, supplemented by virtual options and online extension material, needed to be flipped on its head as a result of the new Covid landscape. With the need to deliver exclusively online we introduced a blended model and worked closely with our Cognition Education subject matter experts and the DET to design a new blueprint for each course that would meet the needs of Learning Specialists.

This course was very comprehensive, flexible and valuable. It has equipped me with the many tools and resources required to fulfil my Learning Specialist role.

Design

We designed the blueprint around three main phases of activity – initial engagement, knowledge and skills development, and reflection – with Canvas serving as the central learning portal, tying all of the elements together. The solution was a robust synchronous and asynchronous blended learning experience grounded in research and enabled by best-practice adult learning principles and methodologies.

Each course provides an online onboarding experience, introducing the subject matter and learning journey before cohorts are welcomed in a virtual workshop. They then work through cycles of self-directed online learning, facilitated group discussions, and an individual improvement focus using the FISO improvement cycle.

Rich online content is structured around levels of depth, beginning with the why and how and providing access to deep learning through both created and curated resources. To increase online engagement, we’ve developed animations, expert videos, group padlet boards, expert podcast content, and integrated custom Storyline blocks for greater interactivity. To link theory to practice and reflection, we’ve also created activities for reflection, ideation, and planning, as well as activation kits that help Learning Specialists embed their learning back in their school.  Interactive facilitated virtual workshops were designed to build onto online content to explore complexities and practical applications on the job further. To support the consistent delivery of these sessions, we worked with Subject Matter Experts to develop workshop materials and facilitation guides.

During the design of the first course, DET introduced a new third-party authoring tool (integrated with Canvas), so we pivoted from our initial development approach to adopting and leveraging the tool. This involved forming a new working relationship with the third-party developers, including new workflows and shared prototyping tools, allowing us to design and develop quickly. Our ability to respond with flexibility and agility has been key to the success of this project.

During 2021 we supported the ongoing implementation and roll-out of iteration two of these courses and the introduction of face-to-face elements. We’re also in the delivery phase of a custom online training needs assessment tool built around the DET Learning Specialist capability framework, FISO continua proficiency levels and success criteria. This will be used by learners to help them identify their strengths and opportunities for development and guide them to the most suitable learning available.
